BANGLADESH INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION CENTRE
The Institution for Alternative Dispute Resolution
A BIAC team led by Director Mr. M A Akmall Hossain Azad attended a Zoom conference call today with Ms Athita Kominder, Head of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNICITRAL) Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RCAP), Seoul, Republic of Korea and her team. They exchanged views on matters of mutual interest. During the discussion Mr. Azad gave a background of the emergence of BIAC and said that with Bangladesh becoming a party to the New York Convention and examples provided by the UNCITRAL Model Law, the Arbitration Act 2001 was enacted following which BIAC made its own Rules of Arbitration in 2011 which was updated in 2019. He said that BIAC has reacted to the current global crisis of COVID-19 pandemic and the future new norms for handling of dispute resolution, by quickly converting cases, originally slated to be in person to their virtual, cost effective and efficient system that allows cases to be arbitrated, mediated and negotiated through the use of video technology. Under the programme of holding a series of webinars during this COVID-19 crisis, Mr. Azad proposed that, BIAC is willing to organise its 13th webinar jointly with UNCITRAL RCAP, Seoul, tentatively in the 2nd week of April 2021.
Both teams discussed at length on details of the webinar and agreed upon the theme of the session to be “Regional Perspective of ADR on Ease of Doing Business in Asia and the Pacific Region’’, subject to final nodding by the respective managements. The UNCITRAL RECAP, Seoul and BIAC teams also agreed in principle to work out a plan to find out areas of cooperation between the two organisations. Ms Jenny Hui and Ms Eun Young Nam, Legal Experts of UNCITRAL RCAP, Seoul and Ms Rubaiya Ehsan Karishma, Counsel of BIAC joined the conference call.
